Cover crop, Halloween deco and bird seed. 

As a cover crop, it smothers weeds, is drought tolerant, and while similar requirements to corn for nutrients, it returns 100% back to the soil as it's easily broken down where corn stalks can take years. 


Though we might be breaking the drought cycle this year.  So far we're at 170% of normal to date, and already have ~70% of a normal year's worth of water with 3 months left in the water cycle.  Barring an extreme shift in the pattern, we'll be facing floods and heavy water in spring.

Plus it should encourage my native bees to return.  No garden last year and disturbing their habitat meant a big loss in that population.

BUT, they're likely not DEAD, really.  While a honey bee range is a square mile or so, a lot of the sweet bees and squash bees I was cultivating are more like 100 yards max.  They likely moved to a neighbor's location, I just need to encourage them to take up home here again.

And the Bumble bees were perfectly happy with the milk weed, so stuck around.   

I did manage to keep a couple female squash bees assuming they survive the winter.  That's absolutely key.

Depends on your point of view. 

Theoretically "Done" by Monday, with the caveat that the wrong shower glass was ordered and the correct stuff has no ETA yet, and there's a ton of yard stuff (re-grading the yard where it sunk, putting the fence back up, etc) that can't be done till spring now. 

But "Done" doesn't mean done, either.  I still have to move back into the master bedroom and empty tons out of storage. 

So, I'm guessing mid to late Feb for the interior to be done where I can relax, and god only knows on the yard work. 

My shop will be a continuous work in progress.  There's a lot I want for there, but budget is just going to have to piece meal it when I can. 

There's also going to be a crack where the old and new house met along the ceiling.  Waiting to see how bad it gets before they patch it.  Apparently they expected that might happen and assure it's no big deal.  I recognize the challenges there, structurally, and we faced a similar problem when my parents built their addition, having to redo the ceiling 2 years after expanding, it's just no less annoying.
