Thought it was kind of sweet.

Farming update:

So, for 3 weeks or so, we've had enough rainfall that I've not needed to water the lawn, and since I'm purposely attempting to stress both the tomatoes and pupmkins into ripening, no need for watering the garden either.

The Skunk has been absent the last few weeks as well, either someone trapped him, or the rain has kept him away, but the slugs have been mounting a vengeful resurgeance.

Squash bugs are all but absent, however.

Picking pumpkins come Friday/Saturday.  Water gets shutoff the following weekend.

Debating whether to chop down the raven grass and goliath corn before we head out of town or wait till we get back.

Thing that annoys me is even with all the rain, neighbors have left their sprinkler systems blasting.

Pointless waste, really.

Noticed something a couple weeks back, and doing the lighting tests this weekend really highlighted it.

At some point, the city has come by and changed all the bulbs in our street lamps to LED thingamabobs.  The results have been quite interesting:

The old lights were amber colored.  The new ones are WHITE, to maybe just a touch of blue mixed in.

The new lights are VERY DIRECTIONAL.  Probably a 120 degree broadcast down.  The old ones were full 360, but with the reflector on the top.  Still, the new bulbs broadcast their light in a MUCH more defined cone under the lamps.

The result is 2 fold:

1.  The neighborhood, as a whole, is DARKER!  Outside those cones, the whole place is just BLACK unless someone has a garage light on.

2.  They've changed enough of an area, light pollution is down, and the night sky is noticeably improved.

More specific for ME, however, THE STREET LIGHT NO LONGER TOUCHES MY YARD AT ALL.

I was already fairly fortunate in that I had a tree blocking it from most the FRONT yard, but the old light used to color up most of my side yard and a decent portion of the back.  I still get some light pollution from our neighbor's windows and/or back porch lights, however.   Usually the back porches are not an issue for Halloween.

I really need to make a scrim to go along the fence.

What type of scrim? The material or the lighting device?

What BU says.

I have enough fabric, just been lazy about building a frame, and would be a nightmare for storage.

Yep, that's wiggles.  MOST likely will emerge tomorrow.  I'm going to attempt to let the kids experience feeding it before we let it go.

We took Chompy over to the neighbors.

"Sleepy Hollow"  series, caught the first 20 minutes or so last night, have it recorded to watch later.  The boss's eyes were rolling and I was chuckling.  That show REALLY, REALLY doesn't want you to think about the plot.  AT ALL.

That was my point.  I'm shocked as well.

I was using my 50MM F1.4 lens wide open on that shot, the narrow depth of field, coupled with the spotlighting on the cocoon, the net(about a foot in front of the cocoon, and RIGHT in front of the lens) just evaporated into nothing.  I expected it to be a little haze, but it's just GONE!  Optics trickery, not photoshoppery.

I'll get a wide shot of the butterfly box tonight.

Man's unfailing capacity to believe what he prefers to be true rather than what the evidence shows to be likely and possible has always astounded me. We long for a caring Universe which will save us from our childish mistakes, and in the face of mountains of evidence to the contrary we will pin all our hopes on the slimmest of doubts. God has not been proven not to exist, therefore he must exist.
