Share your talent, by showing off your favorite original scarecrow creation, old or new - Judged by members of our very own Rocky Mountain Haunters group.

First, Second and Third place prizes for the most popular entries.
SCARE OFF! REGISTRATION

I was about to enter Hector in this thing....

Then I read the finer print.

Quote
You may enter an existing original scarecrow or build a new one - get creative!
Your finished scarecrow MUST be free standing
If your scarecrow requires power, it must be from a battery source - any size
Finished scarecrow images MUST be submitted no later than October 1st - 2017
Your scarecrow cannot contain any vulgar or sexually explicit content
Your scarecrow MUST NOT contain any of the following:
Straw
Corn Stalks
Tires
Anything that is combustable
Judges decisions are final.
One haunter will be selected as the “Utah Halloween Expo - SCARE OFF! Grand Champion”
Judging will be provided by select members of the Rocky Mountain Haunters group

What is a scarecrow without combustible material?
I'm assuming my grapevines count as combustible.
No straw?
Corn stalks?

In other news, I haven't heard anything about the city doing it's scarecrow contest this year.  I might have to think about this other contest for next year.

The only other contest locally would require my scarecrow for Halloween night, so it's a no-go.

Perhaps they want to use torchlight, but "nothing flammable" seems to restrict the scarecrows to metal/glass/ceramic/masonry.

Without clothing and straw or cornstalks, it doesn't seem very authentic. Might be artistic, but would it pass for human to a crow?

It wouldn't be EASY for me to transport it to the expo (very south of here), it doesn't "stand on it's own", needs anchoring into the ground, etc.

Just wasn't built with that thing in mind.  I'll see what they actually do this year.

Talia meanwhile is building a vampire fairy scarecrow out of a doll, in the hopes the city contest goes on.  She finds the idea of a teeny scarecrow about as funny as I do a scare CROW.

The boss and I stopped by a local Spirit last night.

Their main display piece is the bridge of death.

It was surrounded by various 'dark harvest' figures.  Makes me laugh.

Otherwise a horribly organized store.

Ok, so I need some opinions.

What would you guys do with the back yard?

Aside from cleaning up the various junk, and removing the bridge of death, these areas are more or less unchanged.

"the left"

Back house

Back fence (all the wood here is gone)

Back swing (construction junk around swing and near shed gone):

"The Right" (no real good pic, but it's where my gardens are, I really just want a path down the center over here)

So, what we NEED:

Path on the Left.  Be it concrete or other.  Flower bed or no.

Path on the right.  Be it concrete or other.  Gardens on either side of it, though I'm open to raised beds over there.

SOMEWHERE for a fire pit.  Permanent preferable.

What we'd LIKE:

A covered space somewhere.  Be it a traditional patio against the house, or a gazebo out by the trees.

Special challenges that don't really show on the pics:

Patio in the trees:  those trees are pushing up more and more ground each year.  Probably destroy something in 5-10 years out there.

Patio against house:  There's a greater grade there than it appears.  A patio up against the house out to about where the bridge was would probably be raised 1.5 steps at the end to be level.  (which admittedly opens the possibility of a deck-ish structure).

Well, I'd definitely go for patio against the house, but that's largely due to a porch-sitting tradition in my native culture that I don't imagine Desert-ret has.

Is the idea to do what's best for the yard as a living space and work around/with for Halloween?

I'm not designing specifically for Halloween, other than wanting a permanent path down the 'right' side (side effect of eliminating grass, which I happen to hate, especially near the gardens).

I don't know if it's budget-plausible at all but a mini stone henge around the fire pit would be fantastic.  Both for holiday and just our style in a general sense.

I've toyed with the idea of a 'sun room' ish patio (covered and screened), akin to what old man Zitto used to have back when I worked on his farm, but it would require roof modification, which we've had enough of.

ORIGINAL, ORIGINAL plans was to have a deck off the back of the house instead of extending the master bedroom/bath.  Do not regret the bedroom extension.

This work?
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/5895+Cedar+Lane,+Ogden,+UT//@41.1553567,-111.9309945,73m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m8!4m7!1m5!1m1!1s0x875306672277e071:0x1a1391e3991b4ce5!2m2!1d-111.930876!2d41.155512!1m0

That is Pre-expansion.  The back of the house now comes to the end of the old patio there.

Looking at the pictures now, though, I could wrap concrete down the 'left', following where I had the bridge and more or less rebuild the old patio size on that side no problem.  Big enough for a 12x12 gazebo eventually.

That would leave room for a new fire pit area possible roughly between the 2 window wells in the second picture.

Stonehenge firepit is go, if you ask me - it would take making forms and pouring concrete to make the components cheaply yourself, and you have the technology.  -Of course, that would give you a structure you could cover/redress various ways when it's not right for your Halloween theme of the year.  The pillars could easily be made so as to possibly double as tombstones, too.

I had to copy/paste to get the link to work right -I think- but a satellite view of the treetops covering your back yard is incredibly unhelpful.

Technological advance is an inherently iterative process. One does not simply take sand from the beach and produce a Dataprobe. We use crude tools to fashion better tools, and then our better tools to fashion more precise tools, and so on. Each minor refinement is a step in the process, and all of the steps must be taken.
