That morning wind shift just as I said.  Picked up Talia.  Evacuation order is a block away now. We're packed and ready if we need to move.

News conference. They basically can't even fight it now it's so big.  The local team had went to Montana to help there and won't be back till morning. 0% contained. Evacuation any time. Night winds will blow it right back into our neighborhood.  Best bet is for it to actually burn Up the mountain now so the winds woul at least turn it back on itself.

They got a big plane in here about 6PM.  There's still hotspots, but the only real fire line is now burning up the canyon where evening winds will turn it back on itself, so all good news.  Most evacuation areas are lifted, only the ones in the canyon are still in effect.

Talking about a close call...

Car smells like an ash tray. 

They reopened the roads, so I was able to drive by most the area in the dark. 

Wind last night stayed down to 10 MPH gusting to 20, rather than the 40 MPH gusting to 60 of yesterday, or we would have been in real trouble.  The active blaze is moving up the mountain, but there's a 3 mile stretch along the freeway that still has glowing and sometimes flaming hot spots.  If the winds had been enough to drive those again, it would be a nightmare. 

It's that lower fire that lost contain yesterday and forced the school closure when the wind shifted direction as it does like clockwork between 10 and noon. 

I don't think our house was ever really in danger.  As envious as I am for all these homes where the builders left the gambrel oak in the yards that could make a great haunted forest, the lack of it anywhere around our house is a great fire break.  All the buildings burned were surrounded by the stuff.

As for the cause of the fire, which began Wednesday 5 percent contained, investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Layton Fire Department early on had looked closely at the area around a hillside power station, where workers reported seeing sparks on Tuesday.

However, as Wednesday morning broke the Interagency Fire Center declared the fire was human-caused, and asked that anyone in the area of the South Weber Park & Ride lot about 7 to 7:30 a.m., when the blaze ignited contact authorities. The IAFC specifically asked for any photos or video taken during that time.

 

That's a lot further away starting point than had previously been reported...
