So.  Joe is a girl





While not unheard of, it's unusual for Oscars to spawn without a mate. 

No one knows entirely why they do decide to spawn when single.  Water is clearly ideal conditions presently.  The new location gets more direct sunlight than before.  The odd weather may be a factor.

Among the more amusing, Oscars being notoriously emotional, with extensive courting and generally monogamous relations, some tend to believe they sometimes view their owners as mates. 

This explains some of the not acting normal, as she was apparently doing some mating rituals...when Alec was near. 

Right now she is insanely protective of the eggs, a change which surprises the boys.  I'm going to have to get in there and clean them out, though.  That might lead to suffering some bites.

Bunking with Alec and the added sunlight are the biggest changes. 

I was reading some mating rituals as signs of stress as well, discovered after trying to figure out how this would happen.

I can no longer imagine trying to keep a fish tank without one.  Especially a large tank. 

Curious business model, though.  You'll never need a replacement (and it's cheaper to get parts that wear out at your local hardware). 

Ours has an especially long hose, I normally would run it out to the garden, using the waste to fertilize.  But that won't work with Joe in the basement, since the whole thing is gravity fed.  (well, I COULD throw the pump on it, but there's not really a need.)


She's normally afraid of the tube, so we'll see how it goes.  Hopefully she attacks it, not my hand, if she remains territorial over those eggs.

About the only redeeming thing about that weekend is how relatively productive I managed to be.
