Flickr photographers braved the cold and snow in the northern hemisphere over the last few weeks to seek these stunning shots of the aurora borealis. Norway’s official travel and tourism bureau says February offers one of the best aurora borealis viewing opportunities, especially above the Arctic Circle.

Also called the northern lights, the effect is caused by coronal ejections from the sun that trigger geomagnetic activity in the Earth’s atmosphere.



Terje Lein-Mathisen took this photo of what he calls a "weak" aurora borealis. He writes: "Nice, cold weather and almost no wind but a weak aurora borealis tonight. Maybe it's better tomorrow."  Flickr aurora borealis photos

Rayann Elzein of ReZ Photography took this photo in January in the arctic and writes: “Today with the arrival of the high speed solar wind stream from the trans-equatorial coronal hole, meaning possibilities of bright and powerful auroras, all my expectations were slowed down by the terrible weather forecasts.

“I decided nevertheless to drive all the way from Inari to Nuorgam (the northernmost point of Finland) where the sky would be only half-cloudy. This proved to be a good decision!

“Then on the way back, about 20km before Inari, after driving 50km inside a snow storm, I could suddenly see some stars and stopped. The aurora danced high and bright in the sky for a few minutes, before snow started falling again (the photo in portrait format).

I was quite disappointed because the weather did not allow me to see all the great aurora storms of the beginning of the year. When the specialists announced the arrival of a CME in the night 8 to 9 January, my last night, I had to go out and find clear skies.
