Back in 1999 to 2003, there where a bunch of really hard ass games.
God modding was popular for that reason. Folks wanted to see the content.

Now the gaming industry with the exception of a few has been "baby-fying" games lately and there is a call towards more brutal games.

It's the circle of life.
