Civ II: Test of Time is like what I did to death, the year before I discovered SMAC.  The study in how I got addicted to 4X games.

I had deliberately avoided Civ 1 in college.  I had the sensible fear that it would ruin my grades, that I'd get nothing done!  In hindsight I wasn't wrong.  I made the right decision back then.

We were still in the days of shared computer labs.  It was unusual but not unheard of to own your own computer at school; some students had them.  It was a primarily Mac campus and PC labs were a stiff walk across a bridge, with a gorge you could plummet to your death if you were so inclined.  Ithaca NY had hot summers, brutal winters, and a fair amount of rain at other times.  Whereas my dorm had 4 Macs available during off-peak hours to play games with.  So like, bother with a PC lab?  NAH.

Made up for it in spades in 1998, the year I quit my day job during the dot.com boom.  Thought I was going to find my star as a game designer and developer.  Still trying.
