Nasa's Curiosity rover will celebrate five years on Mars with a lonely birthday tune

On August 6, 2012, Nasa's Curiosity rover touched down on Mars. It landed in the Gale Crater, an ancient lake which was formed by an asteroid strike billions of years ago.

During its travels, the rover determined the lake environment on this part of Mars offered the conditions needed for life.

Over the last five years, car-sized Curiosity has travelled over 10 miles and studied more than 600 vertical feet of martian rock.

While Curiosity has helped pave the way for potential human exploration on Mars, it's a lonely job.

So, every year on August 6, Curiosity is programmed to sing a lonely birthday tune.

Perhaps someday, someone on Mars will finally hear it.
