Centennial-based United Launch Alliance paid $100,000 in a settlement over kickback allegations involving a subcontractor that the space rocket company voluntarily disclosed, the U.S. Department of Justice said Wednesday.

Employees of the rocketmaker were paid gratuities by the owner of a subcontractor, Apriori Technologies Inc., in return for ULA awarding Apriori work in technology, compliance and project management between July 2011 and July 2015, according to a settlement announcement published by the U.S. Attorneys Office for Colorado.

“Certain Apriori-awarded subcontracts resulted in higher costs being billed by ULA to the U.S. Air Force,” the announcement said.

The Air Force, National Reconnaissance Office and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service investigated the allegations with the justice department.

ULA did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

United Launch Alliance is a joint venture of Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing. Founded in 2006, it’s the primary satellite and space-probe launch contractor to the U.S. federal government and military.

It regularly lands contracts from the U.S. Air Force, NASA and others that are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The business has a roster of hundreds of subcontractors it works with in nearly every state.

ULA employs about 3,400 people, about 1,600 locally. The rest work at ULA assembly plants in Decatur, Alabama, and Harlingen, Texas, and at launch sites in Florida and California.

It is not uncommon to see patients undergo permanent psychological trauma in the presence of the Sphere, before the nerve stapler has even been strapped into position. Its effect on the general consciousness of the culture is profound: husbands have seen wives go inside, and mothers their children. Dr. Xynan left the surface of the sphere semitranslucent for a reason. You can hear them in there.. you can see them. It is a thing of terrible beauty.
