Why did it Crash?
« on: January 20, 2016, 07:19:35 pm »
So I love AlphaCentauri. Very late to the game only discovered it a few years ago but I can't stop playing.

However when my game gets into the late stages, it always seems to crash!

Is there anyway to work out what caused this and how to prevent it?

It always seems to be after my turn when the AI take overs (or Automated Orders)
sometimes I can stop it by buying a complete structure in a city, but I would really like to know what is causing it and I never get to complete a game.

Playing : "Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire" from GOG
Patch : Yitzi's unofficial SMAX patch 3.4 + 3.4b Take 4

What are the size of the maps that you play on? I know large custom size maps often crash later in the game from units on the map exceeding a set limit in the code.

Also, if you have a savegame with instructions of how to proceed (starting with loading the savegame) to cause the crash, I can probably investigate the reason for the crash.

Cheers for the response guys.

I'm playing on the default "Huge Map of Planet" The map is 64x128 which I wouldn't is overly large,
I used to play on ridiculously large maps and it crashed a lot then but I assumed it was because of that.

I have attached my save file.

Just play as Lady Deirdre and move the last 2 units left anyway on that turn.

Thanks for much for the help. Hopefully I'll be able to finish a game.

Your game doesn't crash for me, running scient's patch 1.0. After moving the last two Gaian units, I get literally dozens of fungal blooms and several rounds of global warming. Some of your bases have more than 100 in ecodamage.

oh right,

I'll try that patch and see what happens. Does that mean the issue is with Yitiz's patch?

yeah.... about that... my currently play style is "BUILD EVERYTHING" then "DESTROY EVERYTHING"
But can never get to the "DESTROY EVERYTHING" before the game crashes because of something...

I haven't been playing long so I haven't really learnt much about the game apart from learning from my own mistakes...

<EDIT>

Yup.. with the scient's patch 1.0 it does work. and I see what you mean that's a lot of fungus popping up....
(What causes that) ??

The problem is partially with my patch: The underlying bug causing the problem is an AI bug from the original game, but my patch made it worse, so that it causes crashes rather than just stupid AI behavior (in particular, regarding the use of psi units once the Neural Amp and/or Dream Twister are built).

If you'd like, I can adjust the savegame to "reset" the crash timer, but a true fix (which will fix the underlying bug) will have to wait until the next patch, as it requires rewriting a significant amount.

Hey Yitzi,

Thank's so much for looking into this.

Don't worry about fixing my save.

After having played past it on scient's patch 1.0 the game is pretty much lost for me due to the Eco-Damage and Planet chucking every mindworm and locust is has at me.
I'll play on scient's patch for now and wait for the fix. Perhaps try and not cause Planet to be so angry with me!

It happens the same to me with "Glorious Map" run in SMACX, guess it´s a large map too.
In my case it crashes the game during the first turns of the game.  ???
