Yep.  Back at work.

Much better basic shape to this casting - I gave the last to my artist aunt, who's sick and staying with us.

See, it had turned out those round grove-rays were horrible to mache.

I was pleasantly surprised how well it cooperated with this...

-So I set about repairs to the bad/cracked/pitted moon casting...

What plaster are you using?

(I'm running into a lot of my colorblindness on the pics and can't really tell the extent of the pitting)

So...lets see if I have a pitted Talia head picture...

hmmm, it's in the limbo place.  I DO have it but it's hard to access and impossible from here. 


So.  my el cheapo life cast method leaves a pitted mess as the initial casting.  I'd then scrub the ever loving daylights out of it to get the remaining petroleum jelly off, and set about correcting the thing. 

Taking a knife to the bits that were too raised, and making a thin plaster to actually add into the pits and essentially sculpting a new layer on top.

DAP Plaster of Paris, it says on the bag.  From the hardware store.

I paint plaster on -like, with a brush- where/when it doesn't need a lot of mass.  The water sinks into the already-set plaster and leaves behind a pretty dense shell.  -Then I file/carve and sand.

The last three pics skip the painting in the cracks and pits -I th0ought I'd snapped pics of that stage, but no- and show a few spoonfuls of plaster slopped on the horn points in a hurry while I was casting the good base.

Like, a good casting don't come out of the paper mache molds all THAT rough, but there's always a few bubbles, and the smoother, the better/easier they demold the masks...
