Another thing I liked about DS9 is that as an antagonist, the Jem'Hadar and Cardassians, and Vorta are all intimidating in their own right and do very horrible things, but they show some really sympathetic spots that make them way less one dimensional. While the Jem'Hadar are always the trope of being the subservient loyal soldiers, (reminds me of stereotypical wehrmacht or really hardcore SS troopers) they are utterly ruthless and without mercy. Unlike the Klingons who value martial honour, the Jem'Hadar are more victory at all costs which really sets them apart. Although at the same time some of them do exhibit some degree of personal honour and pride, especially when it comes to following orders or even dealing with enemies at times like when that one Jem'Hadar was fighting Worf and beating him to a pulp, but refused to kill him.

I have for awhile now thought of DS9 as my favorite. It couldn't be the only Star Trek show in existence, but it does a very good job (mostly) of putting Star Trek's utopianism under a microscope and seeing how it would actually work, where the cracks would be, what kind of hard work it would take to keep that dream alive. Too often other Treks spoke of humans of the Federation as having evolved so as to no longer be violent, greedy, etc., but in fact it seemed as if technology (replicators, transporters, computers) did the real work. DS9 runs the Federation up against a superior foe, which negates their technological advantage and forces more light on the moral qualities of these evolved Federation citizens.

[Unorthodox]

I am rewatching Star Trek the Original Series and 80% of the sets is just lighting. I am realizing how much this imprinted on me and how much of my Halloween ambience is created just by mixing coloured lights. I think anyone struggling with lighting mixes could do with a (re)watch and pay attention especially to the way they mix purples in with other colours to give an otherworldly feel.

How the other forum's thread started.  Not me.
