I imagine this required a good director frequently saying "No, that was the Ahnold character" and a lot of takes...

Seriously - a good director can make all the difference.  I know of no reason Schwarzenegger couldn't learn to act, but I figure he'd need to drop a lot of bad habits built up over a long movie career - the man has a very robust sense of humor, and would tend to give lines scary or comedic readings instinctively, when bewildered or afraid was called for.

-But he's pretty bright, and no reason he couldn't learn...

On a semi-random tangeant...

Ever seen Revenge from Planet Ape

Spanish zombie film (Tombs of the Blind Dead) about knights rising from the grave...someone somewhere decided it would be better to cash in on the American fascination with Planet of the Apes and reshot a couple scenes and dubbed over the movie to make the knights into zombie apes. 

Figured you might have caught it at a drive in...sadly very tough to find these days.

I am SO the wrong guy to talk zombies with - to the extent I ever like horror, not so much with gross-out horror.  I have seen a few, but nothing obscure at all.

...I think Halloween was pretty much the template for well-done mad slasher flicks, and Alien and Terminator for SF horror.  I may not have ever mentioned that...

-The first three or four Planet of the Apes movies deserve mention for a kind of effective visceral SF horror, now that you bring that up.

Figured you might have gotten hooked by the ape title when it came out.  ("Revenge from Planet Ape" could have easily been another in that series) 

I really SHOULD make you a list.  I'm EXTREMELY old school in my tastes.  I'll have to think on that. 

For instance, my top 3 zombie movies would be:

Maggie
I walked with a zombie (*Real* zombies, as in voodoo, not flesh eating)
White Zombie (*Real* Zombies) 

Though I could easily split *Real* zombies and Hollywood zombies into 2 categories...

Top Vampire would be

Let the Right On In (If you MUST, Let Me In, the American remake is ok)
Dracula (1931)
Nosferatu (silent)   

Probably have to give more thought on what subgenres to do than actual listing them after that.  (for instance, what subgenre would The Shining go under?) 


In other news, Monster Squad is on Netflix for the month.

You should.  Later seasons in color are good-enough steampunk western James Bond, and I like them better, but it lost something in the process of getting slicker and more accessible.  You want the ones in B&W.  I believe they're on yootoob.

The Wild Wild West Full Episode Season 1 Episode 1 - The Night of the Inferno


Yep - haven't checked to see if this one's especially horror, but season one most always had strong elements.  Plenty to choose from in the sidebar if you watch this on the toob.

-It didn't really seem to mean to be horror - just really punched up the creepy menace of the menaces...  For being what it was, it was clearly done by people who cared about doing it well.
