Kinda works for that house. The 'boulder' wall and all.
But the pumpkin doll at the top isn't what I'd call 'creepy'. Skeletons are that.

That's kinda the whole point with the pumpkin doll, to look harmless.  Then it's supposed to be unexpected when it grabs for you.  Oldest trick in the book, dress like a dummy, then move.

Trying to come up with a concept to take my chimera style into a more traditional scarecrow-like thing for next year...

But, there's a dark and long forgotten corner of the web I'm trying to resurrect that would fit the idea perhaps even better...in fact, I believe it may have even been the inspiration for the above as well...

Alright, now I'm torn. 

I was planning to do a kind of homage to an old inspiration of mine, who quit the halloween business 10 years ago or so, and now does concept art. 

There was an old prop and concept art to surround it with I was hoping to pay tribute to, but he's not returning my inquiries about.  I like to get permission and give credit when I do such a thing...

I guess I could go ahead and do it.  The prop comes up on no image searches (in fact pics of my yard do, as I seem to be the only one that even mentions the guy anymore), but it just don't feel right. 

Guess I need to rethink the whole idea.

So...coming at this a different way. 


1993, the scarecrow standard in the Halloween community was Jack's vision at the start of the movie:



But few actually were able to copy it. 

In 1999, Burton revisited the same vision in Sleepy Hollow.



This led to pretty much EVERYONE doing some kind of derivative.  Including me.



The current hot item people are all emulating is the Sentinels from Pumpkinrot. 



Other than the whole 'everyone's doing it' aspect, I really like the asthetic of them as well.  More skeletal less corpse at the chest, add some lighting, and they could be very 'Uno'. Bifurcate the pumpkin up top as well while you're at it... 

Worth considering.

Yeah, did, and asked if he would mind me using some of those old pieces as inspiration with proper credit.  No answers.  He's responded well to other inquiries and keeps some old tutorials on his more famous pieces up and active, which leads me to believe he's either not ok with it, no longer has the pics, or has no clue what I'm talking about as they were "lesser" pieces.

Then there's the burlap headed scarecrows...but I don't think I want to do another one of those after doing half a dozen costume versions the last few years.

For me harvest and Halloween wasn't just about crops and crows, but surviving noxious weeds.

I was always taken with the similarity between a Horse Nettle ( member of the nightshade family )  and a thorny toxic pumpkin tree.

Pumpkin Tree, eh?

Ray Bradbury, I am not. 



Toying with modifying an old design concept of mine for the purpose.  Was going to really run with the bifurcated pumpkins as a whole theme a few years back.  Use vines with little mini ones wrapped around things to light them up.  Since their inception, they've been rather iconic anyway.  Just take it and run with it. 



Toying with the idea of a vine of little ones winding around a creature with a big one as it's head to make something of an Audrey III.
