Back to school night last night.  Teacher says something to Tali, she responds without hesitation.  Sure, it was what amounts to "this is for you" and "thank you", but after only 4 days camp, it was impressive to see.  The chinese teacher blogs RELIGIOUSLY every day what happened in class.  That's pretty sweet too.

Alec meanwhile has...I'll give her the benefit of the doubt...the wife (maybe daughter) of my least favorite teacher growing up.  Happy joy times.  And, what's this, her supply list was different than the one the school emailed out last week...lovely.

These little guys been giving me a devil of a time.  Crappy autofocus pic, REALLY need a lens...

Anyway, it's one of 5 potential skippers, unfortunately, they are all variable in markings, so lest I find a caterpillar...



They all like grass, though.  Tall grasses.  But none are known to go after the raven grass, so entirely possible they're just stopping by for food since I'm the nectar factory for the neighborhood.  They sure SEEM to be perching for mates though...

Everyone is running a bug bordello.  I'm just a bit more aware of it. 

Duh moment:  Corn = tall grass.  All the corn this year attract those skippers?  Something has been munching the silo corn, just assumed it to be grasshoppers.  (the raven grass is usually more or less untouched)

Be interesting to do a light trap this year.  The range of life has really increased with the increased garden.

Good news. 

Secondary water is being shut off Oct 1 this year.  That's essentially a month early, but it means I don't need to worry about having someone come water while we're on vacation. 

Bad news. 

Pineview has cut back to watering once a week.  This is my Uncle's place growing our pumpkins.  That means what has set will ripen early, but we're limiting any new pumpkins from setting or growing large.  Coupled with the heat, it could wipe out the plants all together.  He's fairly shaded though, so pleasant thoughts...


Harvested the Ambrosia corn stalks.  Thoughts on my modification to the three sisters: 

Planted too much corn too densely.  2 plantings is also not enough.  Need to plant smaller plantings more frequently next year. 

Pumpkins planted within the corn rows did well early on, but ended up petering out later.  Plant around the edges. 

At this point, this year:

Cinderellas are having one amazing year.  Dozen + cinderellas, most respectably sized.  At least one at 2' + diameter. 
Musquee:  Interesting pumpkin, only one confirmed so far.  Possible crossbred seed was bought. 
Luminas:  EXTREMELY disappointing year.  After the fantastic showing last year, they've totally gone to crap. 
Sugar:  Slightly larger than advertised, good production so far. 
Jack Be Little:  HOLY COW, are they a factory! 2 plants, at least 2 dozen pumpkins/gourds. 


Leaning towards not messing with the 'specialty' stuff next year.  Plant one cinderella for eating, and 1-2 musquee for curiousity, then focus on sugar and old zebs.

You were already an accomplished artist of impressive talent - I just helped you a little with what buttons to push.  It's striking and awesome, of course, and legible.  Artists forget that last a lot, but of course a pragmatic showman like you did not.

Would it be slightly improved by making the glow of the letters a color that stands out a little against the green?  Or is matching the white glow of the eyes more important?  Would it be better with a slightly less cramped layout?

I'm not sure.
