On the lighter side, Talia's first day of school yesterday, I took her over to Walmart after for a treat (she LOVES their "chicken cup" popcorn chicken) and she spied "Halloween crunchy cookies!"  In Tali-speak, that's Reeses peanutbutter cups.  "The Halloween ones taste better."


Now, if Dots would put out their Halloween flavors again, I could get excited.  "Bat blood orange" dots are one of the better things I've ever had, candy wise.

I'm having way too much fun with this stuff.  Going to have to shell out for a proper macro lens. 

I was excited to see the first monarch, I had no idea we would become grand central.  There were 4 flitting about the garden when I got home today.  Of note, they are a LOT more timid than they used to be (as in 20 years ago), used to be they become nigh oblivious when feeding, not so much these days.  Took a considerable amount of patience. 

Another female, fueling up for either laying or travel. 



I'll have to pull out a reference on this guy.



But he provides the perfect example of why the point and shoot is not going to work, no manual focus for macro just doesn't work:

See, I knew this was going to happen. 

They want me to be the regional expert for Utah, as they have had reports from a bunch of ignorant people that need someone who might know a thing or two and can teach folks here. 

Take a few pics, use scientific names in your report, and they think you're an expert.  I have a very basic knowledge of butterflies (compared to my wasp/hornet/bee knowledge), but really don't want this to be a chore.

It's the U of Minnesota running the research though.  Weber State (right in my back yard) and U of U (SLC) are tapped out in their departments. 

BYU (hour+ drive south) has a CLUB, and USU (hour+ drive north) has an "agricultural science" dept.  Maybe I could get someone in one of those to sign up.

Yes.  What I'm telling you has to do with something I do all the time here at AC2, and it works - doing every little thing yourself is a mugs game, if you can avoid it; persuading those appropriate to the task to take it on is often a better use of your time, and when you get good at the persuasion, a lot more gets done.
