Um.  Good lord, how do I get this to make sense... 


So, Uncle sam comes to us and says:  I want to buy a new stereo for your station wagon, and cram 20 people in there to hear how awesome it is. 

So, the company counters:  I can't fit 20 people in the station wagon, why don't we buy a bus and you can put in the new stereo. 

Uncle sam wants to dictate what motor and drive train go in the bus, so they agree to buy THOSE parts.  (This is what I normally do, work with Uncle Sam to make sure they're getting the right parts and making sure they fit and work in the bus)

Corporate agrees to buy the interior and body. 

Local management really wants fire red, so they agree to pay for the paint. 

Corporate goes to a Ford dealer in California and buys the interior because we've been buying Ford interiors from them for 30 years, and they've already outfitted 5 busses in Utah and on the books for 4 more. 

Ford dealer contacts a local mechanic to install. 

Local mechanic sucks and causes us a minor headache trying to skimp out on the bolts holding the seats to the floor. 

Idiot boss says "Fine, I'll contact my friend who owns this other local Ford dealership and get them to do it"  Tell's him all the woes, gives them the pricing the other dealer was getting, and asks them to underbid it. 

Local Ford dealer calls up Ford and tells them how much trouble corporate is having with the other dealer and how they can save the account from going to Chevy if they can give him a bit better pricing. 

Ford OWNED the original dealer.   

All hilarity ensues, idiot boss is no longer allowed to handle the Corporate portion and I have to take over the interior.

Moving on to today, I find idiot boss initially forgot to purchase the paint on time.  He awarded that part of the contract to a fly by night operation that can't get on base, AND had a lead time past our due date.  Now I've had to go back and check all contracts he's awarded and figure out what he did, and see if I have any budget to fix it all because I'm sitting here with a fancy stereo Uncle Sam wants to show off and an unpainted bus with seats that aren't secured to the floor.

So someone pointed me to a 1910 book explaining the oven thing sort of.

It wasn’t tied to Halloween. Supposed to be a girl.  And no jack involved. 

But. She would throw a blue ball of yarn into a limestone kiln and go hide with the other end. Supposedly she would then feel a tug on the line and call out “who holds?”  A voice would then call back the name of her groom to be.  Supposedly the devil might also be holding the other end. I've also seen accounts that claim it was more of a dare thing, less divination, something akin to the bloody mary mirror game, with whoever dared you almost certainly tugging on the string to prank you. 

So, it would seem these cards printed in Germany are something of a misunderstanding of that Scottish game.  With the pumpkin man doing the thing (all wrong, mind, still holding the ball) and adding the jack.  It's unclear whether its just an artist impression thing, or if the jack being added became a part of it at some point.  I could see that line of reasoning: the jack will speak the name.
