The water feels warm, the new heater might be over-aggressive.  checking with old school thermometer. 

 

Yeah, new heater thermostat set to 75, running 82. 

So...that's one problem at least.

So, he's burning up.  Especially since I've raised him in 72-75.  80 is top end for the species.  Last time he acted this way was when a heater broken and he nearly froze to death.

How long ago did you discover this?  The tank will cool ten degrees in a few hours, won't it?

You need to treat water before you use it in an aquarium, but I suppose you could overcome that.

Might be a bit gentler to strap an icepack or something to the side of the tank.

It ought to be right on its own by now if that heater isn't comPLETEly of teh devil.

Uh.  Sure...   Mostly you just need to remove the crap your city puts in, which in my tank is done by biological means, so unless you were changing a vast amount of the water, it shouldn't matter.  The sticky part is I HAD to change that vast amount when we moved the tank.  So, he could have been poisoned a bit by fluoride, or chlorine, or whatever else they put in, and the bacteria levels aren't where they need to be yet, and etc, but the water is clear now, and green algae is growing again (sign of very healthy water)

The one problem that might still be going on is the water would take time to adjust back to the PH level with the logs working as the buffer. 

temp still at 77 last night, turned the new heater to it's lowest setting...gonna be really mad if I have to get another new heater...

He's still not eating.  Now at all.  In fact he's taken to playing dead, which has been his sign for "I don't WANT that" for a while.  (he'll go lay down on the bottom of the tank)  Debating whether to go buy some more goldfish.  He shows interest when I open the 'new friends' side of the tank, but nothing when I open the general feeding side.  He might just be being a pain in the ass. Oscars are known to be moody.  He is also old.  Human terms he's probably 65-70ish.

For gosh sakes, why not turn the heater off until the temperature's down five degrees?  Sounds like Joe needs instant relief.

Wild temp swings are more dangerous at the moment.  77 is within the species toleration zone, just not where I like it for other reasons.

Yeah, fish other than goldfish and Koi aren't very tolerant of temperature change.
