Having looked at the code, I have to revise my position and conclude that this is not a bug; it's just too clearly intended in the code.  It is, however, really bad design, and I intend to provide an optional change (which will also affect missiles, which apparently have the same issue) in 3.0.0, as it makes native life too easy to deal with.
