I'm positive it doesn't and you're free to probe.

Interesting...I almost wonder if that's a bug.  I wouldn't expect a damaged Probe Team to be as effective as an undamaged one.

Probably not a bug.  Damage affects direct combats with units and other probe teams.  But once your team in at the location, it is probably a matter of plugging in your portable computer to the site being probed, and letting loose your AI.

I would agree with that, other than the fact there's only two ways (which I can think of) to get a damaged but not dead Probe Team.  One of those ways is Probe Team vs. Probe Team - which I always assumed was an AI battle rather than a physical one.

To get a damaged probe team:

1. Winning probe combat

2. Artillary / Navel barrage

3. Collateral damage when a combat unit in the stack is killed by an enemy ground unit, but other friendly combat units remain in the stack.

4. Airdrop

There may be others, but that is all I can recall off the top of my head for a regular probe team.  An armored probe team can also be damaged by surviving regular combat.

It may be both: "My AI beat your AI. Now I konw where you are and I'm going to hunt you down and kill you."
But how would that explain when they fight out in the field? Wouldn't that have to be physical?

It is not uncommon to see patients undergo permanent psychological trauma in the presence of the Sphere, before the nerve stapler has even been strapped into position. Its effect on the general consciousness of the culture is profound: husbands have seen wives go inside, and mothers their children. Dr. Xynan left the surface of the sphere semitranslucent for a reason. You can hear them in there.. you can see them. It is a thing of terrible beauty.
~Baron Klim 'The Music of the Spheres'
