Yeah, the expression literally translated to Dutch really sounds strange.
Anyone in the known of the origin of this expression in the English language? In particular where the 'color' part of it comes from?

I don't know. I guess I've heard it more often or originally as "Color me embarrassed."

We do relate some colors and emotions (red = angry or embarrassed, green = envy. blue = sad), so the idiom is a way of announcing emotion before it's facially apparent.

In Dutch, we could use a variant of colored/blushing cheeks. "rode kaakjes", or "blozende kaakjes". Mostly for kids and and (younger) women though.
