Discarded Factions?

Every few months, I heed the siren's song and drift back into thinking up additional expansion factions for SMAX.

Some of you may be familiar with my concepts for the Hunters of Chiron (a nomadic faction based on traditional visions of masculinity concerned with man's need to experience danger), the Human Ascendancy (scientists bent on forcing the next evolutionary leap for mankind), the Dreamers of Chiron (drug-addled parapsychologists inspired by the movie Inception), and the New State (a meditation on feudalism).

Does anybody know if Brian Reynolds ever spoke about how he came up with the original factions for the game and whether there were any that didn't "make the cut"?
