Do any of these need the arrow?  Solid black background, or scanlined?

i read that: 'Garne'. i bet it's because of the scanlines, but can you add a blue pixel somewhere..

nope. the last is the most work-intensive one:

scrolling from right to left 'challenge' (SMAC blue color) on the SMACish background with scanlines. the boreder should remain the color of the background for the entire animation.

how's that for a challenge?

Wait; now I get it.  In the SMAC icon style, animated, the word 'challenge' moving across?  I can do that.  You do mean left to right, don't you?

left to right would mean reading it backwards in my view.
