Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko was revealed to the world in black and white photos taken by the Philae lander. Three weeks later and the Rosetta Probe has sent back the first color photo from the fast moving space object.
While the Philae lander showed off what appeared to be a steely grey surface, the new photo features a juicy red-brown color tone that more accurately represents the comets true colors.
The new photos were revealed in an upcoming research paper that features pictures from the full spectrum of Rosetta’s OSIRIS Narrow Angle Camera. The images were captured using the same camera that took photos of Mars as the probe shot past the red planet on its journey towards Comet 67P.
The probe was launched in 2004 which means the camera does not feature the most up to date camera technology. Despite older tech, the images still offer a decently clear view of the comets surface. The image appears slightly blurry because each color slice was shot from a slightly different angle as Rosetta transited around the comet.

On December 18, researchers from the European Space Agency and German Aerospace center will release higher-resolution images of the comet.
Realizing that higher-resolution images were still weeks away from release, Reddit user IG-94 placed the image in Photoshop and created a better looking finished product:

Researchers are currently analyzing data sent home from Comet P97 after the Philae Lander managed to gather around 80 percent of the data researchers were hoping to collect. The lander then went into hibernation as it ran out of battery power and lost contact with the sun after landing in a more shady spot of the comet than originally anticipated. The lander users solar panels as its source of power and researchers are still hoping to receive more data as the comet moves closer to the sun.
