that's what I expected.    might not have helped, I'm trying to work out how to heavily modify the mechanism anyway.

A cam drive would turn out more like the graves.  A crank is...confusing to explain. 

Standard crank ghost is pretty much a staple of haunted houses and dark rides.  When you start pulling the strings around joints and making them each do multiple motions it gets a lot harder to map out.

Here's a similar setup to what I'm considering.  The crank ghost heavily modified here, multiple strings moving numberous parts each.

Wallbreaker, aluminum crank arm and rubber bands

Flying Crank Ghost

OLD school smoke and mirrors, buddy.  There are dozens of these mechanisms at Disney in a variety of rides.  From floating objects (*cough* madame leota *cough*) to full body apparitions.  (I don't really see rides the same as most people, I see that device here, this one there, the other over there, etc, not really the display as normal audience sees it)

Axworthy ghost mechanisms are a little more difficult to hide... 

Anywho, still deciding whether I'm doing crank or cam.  Meanwhile working on the thing I'm going to try to animate.
