I was looking at the fish and I had the same thought I usually do when making a selection or expressing a preference-
"I like the blue ones!"  I'm so predictable. My dog is the same way about brown dogs.

My hesitation with that is the wall is blue behind the tank.

Stomped out a circle to mark the proposed layout.  Had to drop a stone, but I'm liking the alignment a lot.  We'll put short ones towards the house, and tall ones out west.   



We also stopped at area pet stores this weekend.  hEt has signed off on the Blue Acara.  Likely with a couple angels in the tank.

I can see that interpretation.  And I'm fine with it.  Later we can add pieces to more completely make a 'circle' such as the stone lights I've been seeing while looking for various things.  Not a priority for now, but would work for later.

Slowly cobbling the aquarium back together. 

There a couple of REALLY gorgeous upgrades at the pet store that I must resist.

One is a 125 show tank (extra long and tall at the expense of depth).  Fantastic display tank, but might be overkill for our space. 

The other a 150 Tall that's stunning with a similar footprint to my current. 

This is a place I can easily sink a year's budget without a second thought, but I need that $ going outside...

In that light, I didn't upgrade our filter either, even though the trays are starting to get brittle.  I can get at least a year out of it as is.  We're also going with my tried and true dollar store media for half the filtration as well.   

I want to add an undergravel filter, but am finding they are out of vogue these days and hard to find for anything bigger than a 20 gallon.  It's not a deal breaker, just wanted to leave planting the aquarium as an option later (not in the budget right now).  Yes, I know they aren't needed for planted aquariums and are antiquated for that purpose, but most of what I do is antiquated anyway, and you can use them as a quick and easy cleaning port by just slapping the vacuum over the tube.

Oh, and one other thing. 

When we got Joe, Glofish were a curiousity you might find in a random store. 

Now they are an abomination overtaking the hobby, and take up a third of the available stock in the freshwater section.  With tanks, decorations, plants, and lighting specifically designed for them. 

One might think I'd be all for a blacklight fluorescing fish, but that's what glass fish were for, with skeletons that fluoresced and clear skin.

Can you guys see my frankenfilter?  The canister plugged into an undergravel...

Like Vera, this creates a merger of very oldschool tech blending with the new.  In practice, it basically increases my canister media by at least 300%, coupled with the oversized pump on the filter already, we'd be suited to filter a 250-300 gallon tank, but just makes incredibly stable conditions for me here.
