Father had lost his head over the winter, so I just carved him a real one...This actually gives me an idea for a group of props I can put choice carvings from the party on in the future.

I certainly like the torches better, but I do like the whole giving folks something different vibe of this lighting getup.

Yeah, I've gotten accustomed to the store bought, but home-made ones are rewarded.

As you know, I went with the clown.  A lot of the music posted previously in the thread was me specifically searching for songs FOR the trunk or treat.  I managed to strike that perfect nervous but not terrified level I shoot for, which I wasn't sure I'd be able to as a clown.

There's going to be plenty of appliance work involved in my makeup for Halloween night, though.  As long as I have a bald head, I'm going to utilize the real estate.

The sword would be a lot more striking for these purposes naked-blade, but this weren't my first rodeo, and I knew that in a crowd, I didn't want to excite the little boys that much.  -Besides, I made the scabbard, and I'm proud of it.

As it turned out, some of the dads were nearly as thrilled.

The trick, I discovered, was to stand just past the car and draw about an inch of steel to draw attention as they walked past, then keep a straight face and maintain eye contact.  I have what the kids would call resting [girldog] face, anyway, and the beard somehow made it look like not a costume.

Trunk or treats -any "Halloween" activity- in broad daylight are fundamentally lame, so I'm glad SOMEbody there was doing something faintly scary, even if I just threw on something I had lying around and improvised the rest...

Trunk or treats? I thought it was trick or treats?

That boy's face on the pic was good.
I'm a bit surprised the pommel of your sword didn't look more as a ;uno face...

It's a pun - The candy's dealt out from open car trunks.

Don't blame me; somebody else's lame idea.

Great picture I like the scabbard, too.

I’ve always been confused by the argument that they are “safer” than traditional door to door.

You know. Teach the kids to take candy from a strangers car...

I didn't know trunk or treat was a thing. The following article indicates that it's originally a result of churches not digging Halloween and the safety factor is related to kids not getting hit by cars after dark.

I was just assuming parents were getting too lazy to walk their kids door to door.  ;cute

Broad daylight is lame on the face of it - it also removes the adventure aspect of trick or treating, and almost all the exercise.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/free-range-parents-cleared-in-second-neglect-case-after-children-walked-alone/2015/06/22/82283c24-188c-11e5-bd7f-4611a60dd8e5_story.html

Adventure and exercise are subject to investigation for child neglect. Apparently letting your kids, 10 and 6, walk alone to the park results in an investigation each time, since these parents were investigated and cleared twice.

I dunno.  Maybe it's just where I'm from or the ongoing decay of society, but I occasionally walked home from school -a half hour shlep- in my youth, and we rarely had an escort on Halloween.  -Not that there was a lot to Halloween in my rural neighborhood...

In elementary school a bunch of us used to spend hours walking down the railroad tracks.

For Halloween, we were in a set of apartment buildings next to a set of townhouses so there were hordes of kids and a bunch of adults with their and their neighbors little kids. Wasn't high traffic in terms of cars but several of the kids and most of the adults had flashlights.

The wind cropped up during the day and would have been a major disaster if I had gone 'full sized'.  But with just the front yard, and only 2 major props out, I was able to go get enough rebar to secure the 'minor' decor.

New lighting design, just messing around.  If you've known me long, you know I hate seeing the bulbs, but the wind pretty much destroyed any attempt to hid them.

Probably more people than ever come over for the party, with only a couple commenting on the lack of the back yard, though everyone understood why we scaled it back to the front only.

I was a lot less busy with it all up front, not needing to continually hop back and forth to see if kids were breaking something as well.

The wind subsided for the start of the party, but picked back up around 8:30, which meant I didn't get my normal photo shoot after everyone left.

I'm always impressed with the wonderful diversity having this community carve makes.  From crude faces to real artwork, I love it all next to each other, making it look like a real psychopath carved them all...
