Well, there's quite a few more of the spanish immersion schools, I figure they're just doing that as an excuse for all the borderhoppers anyway.

Kinda wish we lived in one of those districts.  At least then when she's a teenager I'd know what she's calling me when she mouths off.

One of my wife's friends lived in California when her teenagers were growing up. There was a language requirement, and 2 out of three chose American sign language.  It's not that the kids said anything bad about their Mom, but they knew they could drive her crazy by signing to each other in her presence.

In some households making voodoo dolls out of corn husks with the kids would probably be strange.

Debating whether I want to actually use them or not.  Letting them dry out to see.  Not like I don't have enough corn husks.

Did one of the kids do that one, or you?  It's nice, but I'm a lot more impressed if Talia did it...

So, after eating our second round of corn last night, I think I have a full review for King Kool corn:

We saw approximately 50% emergence from the seed planted.  We were within the minimum temps listed, but barely.  Unfortunately, I didn't have enough seed for a second planting to see how much that impacted emergence.

Stalks grow to 5-6' tall, as listed, and are a little more sparsely leaved than most corn, which helped them withstand the wind.  2 ears per stalk.  Tassling starts at 4' tall, and the pollen emitted is coarse and abundent, covering everything in a visible dust.  Bees acted near drunk on it.

EXCELLENT polination of ears in our garden.  We are at the bare minimum 4 row depth for corn, and normally see a little more sparsely developed ears.  Kernals were a little on the smaller side than most corn, but pretty flavorful.  Not the best SH2 corn I've ever had, but very good none the less.  Better raw than cooked (as most SH2 corn).

Uno's allergic reaction meter:  mild-average.

Ambrosia corn review:

Very good emergence and vigor from the seedlings.  Near 100%.  We were well above the minimum temerature threshhold at planting.

Stalks grow 6-8' tall and are densely leaved.  Coupled with a relatively soft stalk, this led to many problems with the wind.  However, the plants would knock down, then pop right back up.  After the beans grew enough to start climbing, the wind problems stopped (thank you thee sisters planting).  Tasseling starts at 5-6' height, and the pollen is very fine, nigh invisible and profuse.  Bees took notice, but not with the same zeal as the King Kool.

Average polination for the garden setting, ears showing definite holes at times, expected from a garden planting of corn.  Very small kernels, but LOADS of them per ear.  The boss couldn't differentiate between this SE corn and the King Kool SH2 corn.  I'm a bit of a corn snob, myself.  This was a very sweet SE corn, but has a slightly more buttery flavor to King Kools sweet flavor.  Coin toss whether better cooked or raw as little change in flavor either way.

Uno's allergic reaction meter:  High-severe.  I'm wary of the time it comes to chop this down.

Bug update:

The french pumpkins are in a bad way.  I'm more certain that new unidentified bug is that marmorated asian baddy.  Something's eating on them, in addition to the squash bugs and the protracted heat, the french vinces are struggling.  I've got to milk them out at least another month.

So, we chopped down the king kool corn.  It's stopped producing ears, bundled it up to dry.  This let us have better access to the french vines for better coverage of neem oil, but opens them up to more heat.  If they fail this year, I'm giving up on the french varieties.  They struggled last year as well.

Today in the newspaper, I read the 'volunteers' didn't find it bad. A bit too lean perhaps.

Man's unfailing capacity to believe what he prefers to be true rather than what the evidence shows to be likely and possible has always astounded me. We long for a caring Universe which will save us from our childish mistakes, and in the face of mountains of evidence to the contrary we will pin all our hopes on the slimmest of doubts. God has not been proven not to exist, therefore he must exist.
