Only pic of the Them prototype.  Right before the catastrophe.  In fact, I picked this up just as the doomstorm was rolling in.  Just the mechanics being tested. SORT of worked.  I don't normally use stretchy webs either, and wouldn't for the real thing. Idea was for several to be writhing against the webs.

So, been struggling with pumpkins. 

For the most part I've NEVER been able to get pumpkins to start from seed reliably.  (Exception being dumping literally THOUSANDS of seed into the garden in the fall and letting the resultant volunteers live)

So, this year I was going to work that out.  Bought a window box seed starter kit. 

Nothin' 

I figured it gets too hot in the window here, so I went and got some grow lights, put the seeds in the little pots, figuring the grow lights control the heat better.   I got 4 out of 50 seeds. 

I've since moved on to several other methods, including scoring the seeds, soaking them overnight before planting, and the plastic baggie with a paper towel.

The Paper Towel method swiftly resulted in near 100% sprouting the little roots in 2 days!  The question is whether they survive being transferred into the little pots.

My family got that with watermelons - we grew a few over the years, but only volunteers from throwing rinds downhill into the garden.  Nothing we planted ever amounted to anything.  Didn't have that problem with squash, cucumbers or pumpkins, but couldn't grow watermelon on purpose.  -Which was a pity, because Gramma liked watermelon so much that I still think of happy hot summer afternoons and Gramma sometimes when I eat some.

Of all plants, I didn't expect pumpkins having difficulties sprouting. 

Guess I should post the caveat:

I'm attempting to germinate unusual varieties. 

2 species are traditional FRENCH pumpkins.  I got the one to work (sorta, we're clearly too hot for it some times, so it would get stressed) last year by buying a couple seedlings, so I wanted to try them in the three sisters planting arrangement as the corn would help keep their roots cool.  The other french variety is not grown around here at all, but will make marvelously unique jacks if it works.

The mini pumpkins are technically gourds.  (0% germination on them this year)

Lumina's are notoriously difficult.  Inbred white pumpkins, they are expensive seeds with low germination rates to begin with.  I've been tempted to grow ONLY them and sell the seeds as we had TERRIFFIC luck growing them last year (from seedlings).  4 plants yielded 13 pumpkins. 

The Sugar pumpkins, I just barely planted, so don't know if they would have given me trouble or not. 

All our volunteers are most likely the family heirloom pumpkins (or would be hybrid who-knows-whats if they come from my pumpkins last year).  Our own stock seeds going back at least 50 years, grow great locally.  My uncle plants those for me, and they make up at least 80% of what we use on Halloween.  I focus on the oddities to bring a variety.

I'm bored.  The Barghest is done, and the animated fence is mostly tedious work now.  I need a project, any suggestions you'd like to see my styling applied to? 

Have you given any more thought to a partially exposed/buried skeleton thing, as I believe you mentioned when they found Richard III?

I'd want to do the whole site.  There was a destination truth episode where they visited a ghost town's cemetery, and virtually all the graves were exposed.  That would make a GREAT addition to a more traditional haunted experience...not my yard.
