New Fault Line Map Shows Where Earthquakes Are Most Likely to Happen in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Geological Survey recently released an updated map of all the fault lines that snake around under Oklahoma, a state that that has received plenty of attention in recent years for its frequent earthquakes.

The map, created by U.S. Geological Survey seismologists Amberlee Darold and Austin Holland, is an intricate web of lines in most parts of the state, but there's one region that's noticeably lacking on the fault line map that has been shaking regularly.

Take a look at the map. You'll notice that many of the fault lines are located in the southern and eastern parts of the Sooner State.

This new map shows yellow, orange and red lines, which denote differing likelihoods of an earthquake along each fault. The red lines are optimal fault orientations, which are most likely to create a tremor. The areas along the orange lines have a moderate likelihood of triggering a quake, while the yellow lines denote less danger, but still a small chance, of a temblor.

Here's a USGS map that shows all of the 1,800-plus earthquakes, 2.5 magnitude or higher, that have hit Oklahoma since the beginning of this year. Compare this to the map of Oklahoma's fault lines.

So many of those earthquakes are happening in an area with few fault lines, which should raise a red flag. Scientists have found that hydraulic fracturing – better known as "fracking" – is the cause of the increase in earthquakes happening across the state. At this point, experts believe it's highly likely that the injection of wastewater into underground wells by oil and gas drillers is leading to the small, shallow earthquakes that are felt almost daily by Oklahomans.

The authors of the study said the map was created from their analysis of hundreds of Oklahoma earthquakes from 2010 to 2015. The seismic activity allowed them to locate dozens of fault lines, some for the first time.

According to a separate study released in March, fracking could also reactivate some of the nearby fault lines in the state, triggering larger earthquakes capable of more damage in the future.

I don't lean one way or the other about fracking. I just thought the visible data was interesting.

It is.

gwill, I just want you to know that I link all the science articles on th' Facebook, and when you post some, you're not only putting up interesting stuff and saving me that much trouble, you're also helping me promote AC2 to our kind of people.  I REALLY appreciate it.

And I stood before him, and I sang unto her, and it appeared to listen. His very countenance rippled like the sea, and the sound of my own voice came back to me, distorted. For a moment I thought she was mocking me, or it was nonsapient and mimicking me. Then I understood: the sounds were not important.. it was how I affected his sounds and how she affected mine that transmitted the message.
