We’ve said it before and we’re sure to say it again: This launch stuff never gets old on the Space Coast, does it?

And sometimes, even for those whose job it is to capture liftoff after liftoff in photos, it comes with a surprisingly different shot.



The Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center is shrouded in ground fog after a Nov. 20 launch.


Case in point: Veteran FLORIDA TODAY photographer Craig Bailey cuts through the fog in this beautiful, wonderfully wispy Photo of the Week. Taken just after a Space X Falcon 9 rocket left Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Nov. 20 — Florida's 100th orbital rocket of the year, by the way — it showcases in style the largest building here in Central Florida, visible from many miles away.

Bailey, who’s shot photos of countless launches over the decades, puts it like this: The much-photographed Vehicle Assembly Building is “so iconic a symbol of the space program here in Brevard.”

“Thursday night was one of those nights where the largest building in the area stood tall even through the ground fog,” he said.

“The fog was just beginning to form in the area and did not reach very high. For a little while before the launch, the roof of our building was just a bit higher than the fog. So, it looks as if the building is surrounded by a thin white blanket.”
