Here’s how Sphere has brought the search for UAPs to Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — While tourists and locals watch the stunning displays on Sphere, a new addition on top is watching for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) in the skies above Las Vegas.

In an announcement Friday on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the project was revealed publicly for the first time. Professor Avi Loeb of the Harvard Astronomy Center for Astrophysics — and the leader of the Galileo Project — said the state-of-the-art Galileo Observatory will analyze visible and infrared light for UAPs.

Loeb said in an article published on Medium: One thing is clear: “What happens over the sky of Vegas, will not stay in Vegas.”

He told how he was approached in September 2024 by Sphere CEO Jim Dolan and Jane Rosenthal, CEO and executive chair of Tribeca Enterprises. “They made an offer that I couldn’t refuse,” he said. In September 2025, Loeb climbed to the top of Sphere to see the project finished. Photos on Medium show the result of the work.

Two copies of the observatory on Sphere were installed 10 kilometers away to form a triangle. That will allow observation of distance, velocity and acceleration through triangulation.

UAP is a term used by the U.S. government. It came into use mainstream use recently, officially replacing “UFO” in 2021 to distance the scientific search for answers from the stigma of searching for aliens.
