GATEWAY, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A bright meteor fireball streaked over northern Arkansas early Sunday, NASA reported, passing over Gateway at 1:35 a.m. UTC on Aug. 17 (Aug. 16 at 8:35 p.m. CST).

“This was a flat-trajectory, long-lasting fireball seen over northern Arkansas,” the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said. “Based on what was visible, it may have produced meteorites.”

Scientists mapped a “strewn field” showing where fragments might have landed: larger pieces, up to 1 kilogram, near Gateway, with smaller debris scattered farther north and possibly shifted by low-altitude winds.

According to their website, weather radar did not capture a strong signal of falling meteorites.

“There are a few faint radar signals that might indicate meteorites, but they are weak enough that they could also just be electronic noise,” NASA added.

If the radar data is accurate, the fireball ended about two miles south of Eureka Springs, breaking apart or exploding before hitting the ground.

While it is unclear if any meteorites actually reached the ground, NASA has mapped the fireball’s path and length.

I sit in my cubicle, here on the motherworld. When I die, they will put me in a box and dispose of it in the cold ground. And in all the million ages to come, I will never breathe, or laugh, or twitch again. So won't you run and play with me here among the teeming mass of humanity? The universe has spared us this moment.
