The storage business is big business.  Now people are eyeing the moon as the next storage frontier, whether it be for a landfill or cultural preservation.  At present, using the moon as a landfill would be cost prohibitive.  The cost of moving one pound of anything to the moon is currently $100,000, which means that throwing out your old television set would cost around $6 million.  And there are definitely better ways to utilize that space.

There are currently plans to encapsulate the world’s religious texts in time capsules that can withstand 10,000 years on the moon.  The capsules will be taken to the moon and left there as an act of cultural preservation in case of the total annihilation of the human race.

There are other ideas floating around for utilizing the moon.  In the future, the moon could be used as a space station for launching spacecraft on missions.  It could be the home of a lunar resort.  It could be a solar energy station.  It could be all three, and only time will tell.

For more information about the history of moon missions and the future of the moon, check out this infographic.  What do you think the moon should be used for?

Waste storage on the Moon...

I wonder what would be cheaper: sending our waste to the Moon and landing it there, or letting it depart Earth orbit on an intercept trajectory in the Sun...
