Title: Are you still playing SMAC instead of SMAX ?

Hi,
I'm just surprised that there are unofficial patches released these days targetting both SMAC and SMAX. I mean, this may be a lot of work to fix both games.

I have nothing against original SMAC, but I never play it any more, I only play SMAX with the original factions, throwing sometimes a smax faction in the mix. I feel that SMAX contains SMAC. There are also important technogolies that bring balance (algorithmic enhancement to counter hunter-seeker algorithm). A overpowered secret project (cloud base academy) but it is easy to make its cost much higher or disable it.

And you, do you have only SMAC ? Can you be fan of this 15 years old game without possessing its extension ? And if you have both do you still play SMAC and not SMAX ?

welcome to AC2, vLabs!

the main reason why kyrub did a SMAC patch first, is because the SMAX AI is a bit dumbed down compared to SMAC (the developer did a lousy job on the expanssion).
so, a SMAX patch aiming at improving the AI is more work intensive.

I don't know much of smac AI, do you mean I should get a tougher game against the AI with original SMAC ?
And what if I play SMAX with the original factions ?

indeed. at least, that's what kyrub says and i have no reason not to believe him.

the problem is not in the text files of the factions, but in the .exe file itself.
so, theoretically, playing on the same map, with the same factions and game conditions, SMAC will give you a tougher challenge than SMAX.

That may be a reason to stick with SMAC for some solo games !
