Civilization 7’s creative director, Ed Beach, has revealed that Firaxis is working on a potential third Age Transition setting that would be on the “harsher side” of things and that’s being titled “Collapse” internally.

“It’s still early in testing, and we’ll need time to see if it feels fun and fits well into the game. If it does, we’ll look into when it might make sense to include it in a future update,” Beach wrote.

Firaxis recently introduced a second Age Transition mode called Continuity that gives players the opportunity to keep around most of their units and their positions between Ages, similar to how things have worked in past iterations of the series. Civilization 7’s original Age Transition mode is now called Regroup and is still available as a setting alongside Continuity.

Before the game came out, Ed Beach said in an interview with Newsweek that the team’s initial design for Civilization 7’s Age Transitions was much more radical than what ended up being in the game at launch, so the Collapse setting might pick up some of those discarded ideas and even splinter the player’s empire during the timeskip.

Age Transitions have been one of the most controversial features of the turn-based strategy title, which is what the team had expected.

At Gamescom 2025, Amplitude CEO Romain de Waubert de Genlis wished Firaxis well in turning Civilization 7’s fortunes around and predicted that Civ 7 and Humankind will be as influential as Civilization 5 one day.

For a moment I was reminded there's another Ed (Boon) in the video-game industry and it would be nice if we could have fatalities when finishing an enemy unit. ;kirk

Anyway, I am still waiting for a full fat CIV VII cartridge release for Nintendo Switch 2 to further convince me into migrating to Nintendo's next console from my og Switch. Until then CIV VI is still fine ;nod
